Ruby Cashwell Skipper



Ruby Cashwell Skipper, age 95 of Abbottsburg, died peacefully on June 9, 2017. Ruby was born on August 9, 1921 in Bladen County. She was the youngest daughter of the late Paul and Sackie Cashwell. As a young person she was raised in the Abbottsburg community and enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing basketball. Ruby graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1939. While rearing her four children, she worked on the family farm raising tobacco, chickens and cattle and was well known as an accomplished seamstress. She also worked in a local cotton mill and nursing home. As an avid gardener, Ruby always planted a large vegetable garden that she shared generously with others. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling with family and friends to many destinations including Hawaii, Aruba, Nova Scotia, Mexico, California and Colorado. As a lifelong member of the Abbottsburg Baptist Church, Ruby’s strongest belief in life was her steadfast faith in God. Even while suffering, she showed faith, hope and love to those around her. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude, son Morris, daughter Ramona, sister Sallie McKeithan and brothers, Sonny, Bill and Clip Cashwell.

She is survived by two sons, Dean and wife Shaw and Walter and wife Despy; grandchildren, Susan, Greg, Kimberly, Edie and Rachel; six great-grandchildren, one great- great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are in the care of Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. The family will receive friends 10-11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 (one hour prior to the service) at Worthington Funeral Home with the service following at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Greg Skipper officiating. Interment will follow in the Cashwell Cemetery, Abbottsburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Abbottsburg Baptist Church, Post Office Box 806, Bladenboro, NC 28320.
